Innovation capability and culture: How time-orientation shapes owner-managers’ perceptions

Abstract This study offers a cross-cultural perspective to better understand how time orientation shapes owner–managers’ perceptions of innovation capability in small and medium sized enterprises (SME) tourism. We synthesise the extant literature determine SME internal external capability. Distinguishing between short- long-term cultures comparing data from Australian German, Austrian Swiss (DACH country cluster) SMEs, results confirm that vary across cultures. Results for SMEs short term–oriented show stronger appreciation consumer orientation, creating prospective profit staff incentives; by contrast, long place higher value on accessible knowledge, commitment learning, adaptation. To effectively manage we suggest balanced approach considering both factors. Acknowledging scarcity SMEs' resources, propose owner-managers first focus strengthening their organisational drivers enhance also discuss implications tourism policy, offer recommendations field research note study's limitations.
